Cutting Edge Armor/Weapons Technology
Rewind time to 1010 AD. Think about what types of weapons and armor were used back then. Swords and spears were prevalent. Gunpowder had been invented by the Chinese, but to our knowledge it was still mostly used for fireworks and was just beginning to be explored as a useful weapon.
Things really have changed.
Flash forward to 1000 years into the future. Our cutting edge weapons of today will likely seem just as primitive as a spear does to us... but we have to start somewhere.
Although it is likely that 1000 years in the future they will have developed weapons that are as hard for us to imagine as a Viking would have found a nuclear bomb, but since this is an educationally based game we need to make sure our weapons and armor have a firm footing in the probable rather than just mere specualtion.
By researching cutting edge technology, we can infer the path our future weapons are likely to take. If you have any ideas on "futuristic weapons" and you have evidence that it can be developed based on current R&D, please post your links or findings here.

As well, force field technology for protecting ships from radiation in space.
