Ideas for names here

It occurs to me that if we get this thing running we are going to need a name so feel free to give ideas

I was thinking of this space & science related, trying to find names that wouldn't appear to limit the scope of the game, allowing us to go in many directions if we want to.

1) Faster Than Light (my favorite so far)
2) (Something to do with) Nebulae
3) A Big Bang

All comments (positive and negative) are welcome. I am hoping that, if nothing else, I will get the creative juices flowing and a lot of other ideas will come out.

Comments: Love 1 and 2, not so much on 3.

I really like how people might be playing the game, FTL. (Yes, I just lost)

I love the idea of playing with the word "Light". Light has so many different meanings and we can use this to have a dual meaning...
"Light" as in not heavy, not difficult which fits the pmog format, and then light as in the scientific sense of stars and energy (photons) which fits our space theme.

Hmm, it would still be exploring the internet through a medium, but this time as a space invader of sorts. Soooo, with that in mind:

1. Intervader

2. Net Wars

I'm partial to Net Wars for it's obvious nerd background.

Faster Than Light (ftl) was the old school way of describing hyperdrive, warp-engines, and such, iirc. Harkens back to steampunk, tee hee.

Faster than light is a dream as tachyons supposedly can't return to us.

I actually like the Illeria's suggestion of "Net Wars". It's simple, but it sticks. If we chose not to go with the LIGHT thing, maybe we could put it on the voting table...

What if the name was "L.I.G.H.T.- Net Wars"?
The letters in 'light' could explain what our program does and "Net Wars" could be it's subheading.

After a bit of research I discovered that; should we use "Net Wars", we probably want to couple it with another word or two. NETWARS is already a DOD software project standing for "Network Warfare Simulation". We are looking to get grant approval from a government defense contractor, and we want to avoid any confusion in labeling (you would be surprised at how often this happens)-- which could land our project and/or paperwork in the wrong file/ department and delay funding. Worse still, our funding application could be canceled altogether, because NETWARS is currently fully funded through the DOD and it could be labeled as a misfiled billing.

First, I have to say that starting with an acronym and finding something intelligent sounding to fit it is far more difficult than the other way around. Not that we can't do it (because we is really more smarter than most other peoples ), but it might not be as easy as it appears.

Second, how about Internet Wars, or iNet Wars, or Web Wars, or even just iWars? Just thinking out loud on this one.

Lastly, I still have to say I like FTL - Faster Than Light and Black & Light, but I think that may be because they were my ideas and I am just a skosh biased!

OoooO, I like! Mostly cause the Wars thing was my idea and let's face it people love it when their ideas get recognized.

Also, like GiGi said we'll have to watch out for cross-contamination of other names matching ours. I have no doubt that such a creative bunch of people can come up with a wholly unique name and concept.

If you don't want the 'confusion' factor with NetWars, perhaps one of the other suggestions (or one not already made) with LIGHT appended to it. I like the idea, though!

FTL-Light, ofc, is a double-entendre. Makes some stop and think, say what?, and others think of a light beer commercial. I like the jest. (Did I mention that I dislike the word War? After all, Northrup is a Defense contractor, tee hee. Keep the euphemisms consistent.)

I have had a revalation as far as naming goes...
Name it: "Don't Panic"

Sorry Big 6-- "Don't Panic" is practically branded and no one at NASA or NG will take us seriously if they think we're a Hitchhiker knock off. (Although all of the books were hilarious).
