TNN gets a Stock Market?
I like it, Shiv.
Also-- SgtWidget pointed out that NI awards tools not just cash points. I think that is a great idea. It cuts down on the over abundance of cash that is flowing through games like TNN. And that got me thinking...
TNN gets A Stock Market:
I am curious about making the store more realistic... Can we have the price of tools fluctuate like a market trend, and if so how difficult is that to achieve (coding wise)? If the prices fluctuate could we sell tools back as currency? This means kids could learn economics, to budget for their needs, and to learn about market trends on a small scale. I'd love to see a stock market with charting if we went this route.
There is a bar in Oslo, Norway called “Stock Market” that the prices of drinks is driven by the demand. More people buy a specific drink the more expensive it gets, where as a not very popular drink will have falling prices. They have also set “crashes” into the system that reset the prices. I am curious as to whether or not this kind of thing can be worked into the game for tools, and if so how difficult it would be.
If this tool price is regulated with a counter algorithm that is based on how many people are active users this would keep the prices low as more users sign on. (We don't want to have prices skyrocket 200% 9 months in, which would be discouraging to new users to purchase tools and play.) The other thing this could do is help us flag inactive users, so that if you have been inactive for 6 months or so you are dumped from the system. I see that this could help us avoid TNN's server problem by clearing out inactive accounts.
Note: If any of you brainiacs are interested in looking at the algorithm I already have it worked and you may contact me directly, but I don't want to post it here.
We will also need to maintain 2 databases for this. One that track number of items purchased over time, and another for population.
Tell me what you think. This may be far past our coding capabilities at this time, or it may be something we just want to implement at a later date.

OK, GiGi. Sounds remunerative. You may want to sweet talk Zous (not ZosXaos), as he had a tnn back to change dps into pings. Also had a casino. While he is a competent programmer, I guess, he doesn't like me because I type much too long sentences on irc that his little coding brain can handle. You'll find him here: http://thenethernet.com/forums/forum-games/topics/movie-vollyball and on #PMOG (freenode)

Re: New Currency
Thanks dav2(13). I PMed Zous just to ask some basic questions. I don't know him well enough to say that I want him on our team, but I do have a few inquiries. Did he run the casino through TNN or at another site?
(And I think your sentence length and structure is just fine.)

Re: New Currency
Zous ran the casino somewhat in parallel.
I've posted some of his stuff elsewhere: https://tnnrebootcomplex.forumotion.com/the-nethernet-f3/web-links-and-articles-t43.htm#739

Re: New Currency
I love the idea of a stock market! Another idea I had a while ago would be a game controlled stock market-y type of store... as well as giving other players the ability to set up their own stores on website and set their own prices, as well as stock them themselves. This means that there would be a bunch of player run stores around, where people can get stuff cheaper or more expensive, as well as compete amongst each other for good prices. Players could buy a ton of say... portals when they are really cheap in the market and keep them in their inventory until they go up in price, then sell them at a profit for less than the stock market yet more than they paid. This adds a really complex social and financial factor to the game. As well, players could have shops set to offer discounts to different clans/factions if there will be such a thing.

Re: New Currency
GiGi, apparently I was wrong and on the ni channel, yesterday, Stephen said he made up the casino.
